More conference fodder, this time from a Providence source on the Xavier board (xavierhoops.com):

"More breaking news, it's being reported by sources close to PC that the conference will be 12, the 3 I said before plus SLU and Creighton, and Fox Sports is going to announce the TV deal on Wednesday. Supposedly all conference games will be shown on FOX which will be in 80 million homes.

Now let me just say the source for this info is usually pretty accurate, so even though I believe it, I wouldn't bet my life on it."

Interesting thing about this is that on the SLU board (billikens.com), someone else mentioned that there will be an announcement on Wednesday and that "they would be happy."

I am sorry, but St. Louis and Dayton has no major appeal from a basketball stand point to me at least, especially when Xavier already covers that market. Why would you want two teams competing against each other for the same market? All you need is one team to cover the Ohio Market, which is why there is no need for Dayton. Honestly, if the Big East Kept Cincy, do you really think Xavier still gets an invite to the Big East? It makes no sense at all. You can have another competitive team in our conference and have their own separate TV market instead of two teams fighting for the same one. Any way, I will not be shocked at all if Dayton is one of the teams that don’t get in.

As for West Coast expansion goes. The Big East currently has the biggest Media markets right now in New York, Philly, and Chicago follow by the rest of the schools in the Mid-west and other areas respectively. Perhaps fox/ESPN thinking would be to expand the television market for the conference out west which means more money for both the conference along with TV network. Do I think this will happen, probably not? Now, if that did happen, I can see the conference going to at least 14 teams. However, the closes the Big East will get to expanding out west is by including Gonzaga for basketball only. Gonzaga is reported as having a major interest in joining the Big East Conference.

Jet-, I also read that on the Friars premium page. If so, it's great news, and welcome to the conference (Creighton, Dayton, Xavier, Butler and Saint Louis). Talking about a deal announced Wednesday with Fox Sports 1. Hoping you run the table in the MVC!

Count me in as being Skeptical that announcement will be made tomorrow on the Fox deal. Question, did the B7 reached an agreement on all issues with the conference which includes exit fees, getting the Big East Name, Madison Square Garden etc? Also, knowing how Fox operates, wouldn't they want to make a splash by televising this news during the NFL playoffs or Superbowl to promote their new channel and big addition? what we do know that Fox has a schedule meeting with the Big East Conference tomorrow to discuss a television contract among other things. In the end, anything is possible, but unless all the aformentioned issues with the current conference is resolve, I highly doubt will hear any big announcement tomorrow.

I have no idea if Dayton gets in or not, but the notion that Xavier would carry that market isn't true. Sure you'll get some viewership across the state, but the state is pretty much divided geographically. From Columbus on north, its OSU football plus the Browns, Indians & Cavs. In CBus, its OSU football, a cross section of both the cincy & cleveland pro teams and a OSU hoops. West of Columbus down to south of Dayton its OSU football, Dayton Basketball, the Reds and a cross section of the Browns & Bengals. South of Dayton, down to the river its the Reds, Bengals, UC & XU hoops plus a solid core of Kentucky fans.

There is no question that OSU football carries the state, but in hoops, no one team carries the state or much beyond their particular market. Xavier will carry the northern part of the state no more than UC or UD would/does. Say what you will about the Dayton market, its obviously smaller than many and the line b/w the Cinci market and the Dayton market is blury but its passionate about its hoops, particularly the Flyers. When ESPN released their top 20 ratings drivin markets over the last decade, both Dayton & Cinci finished in the top 10 (plus Milwaukee). UD hasn't had the success on the court that XU or Butler has had over the last decade, but it stands fairly even with both Creighton & SLU. It has all the financial backing and facilities a team could hope for, just need the right coach to put it all together. Purnell could coach, but his recruiting tailed off big time, but at least he brought the program back from the burial Jim OBrien tried to give it. Gregory could recruit, but couldn't coach an offense out of a wet paper bag. We'll see what Archie brings to the table.

If any part of that is true, id guess that the announcement would simply be the 5 new teams.

The television deal would could at some later point

In Ohio, every market has Ohio State first and the local team second, conference members are next, followed by other Ohio schools with proximity to the city giving relevance. In Dayton, its Ohio State, then Dayton and Wright State to a much lesser extent, then Xavier due to being in the A-10, then Cincinnati. If Dayton and Xavier are no longer in a conference together, the interest in Xavier in the city of Dayton probably drops below Cincinnati.

As for the National Market, I do believe Xavier has the edge over Dayton due to recent success, which I see waning if they keep Mack too much longer. However, Dayton has an edge over Xavier in terms of Alumni as they have over twice as many students. Everywhere I have traveled in this country I have been stopped by someone who sees my Flyer clothing and wants to talk Flyer Hoops. If anyone caught the UD/USC game the Dayton fans had a very large presence.

I am not saying Dayton should join the C7, or that I even want them to 100%. If they join, thats fine, if they don't, I hope the A-10 does something to improve, or Dayton either joins a different conference or starts a new one with the likes of George Mason, VCU, and other schools looking for a good basketball conference.

My personal guess is that Xavier, Butler and Dayton are joined at the hip on this.

Wow you have never been to Cincinnati have you? In football Ohio State is still dominate. In basketball most people who claim to be lifelong OSU Basketball fans can't name five players that played before Greg Oden. When it comes to basketball in the Nati area, the Bearcats are the dominate team. Xavier has a very strong following and is the second most followed team. Coming in third is probably Kentucky. Ohio State is so far behind any one of those three teams its not even funny.

You are the first person I ever heard that says UD is second fiddle for Basketball in Dayton. I have never lived in Dayton, but know plenty of transplants in Cincinnati. The ratio of UD Basketball fans to OSU Basketball Fans + Wright State BBall Fans is probably 5 to one. Given that the mediocrity (or worst) that UD has expeciernced since abandoning the Xavier and Butler to join the Great Midwest, and the population of the Dayton area, there attendance figures indicate they are the big dog in a small market.

Above I mentioned Dayton abandoning Xavier and Butler to join the Great Midwest, becuase it illustrates the number one rule in conference expansion. EVERY SCHOOL WILL DO WHAT IS BEST FOR THEM. My guess is if Xavier had a choice between UD and another program they would support Dayton. But I seriously doubt that Xavier and/or Butler would say invite UD or we are not joining.
