I humbly credit any "win" to a regular dietary intake of fiber

The credits get paid out out over 5 years, but the exit fees have been collected.
While they aren't cutting a check, they are foregoing their cut of a big pie.

The BE bylaws had a provision for no no exit fees if schools left in a block (possibly a % of conference members) so that $35M never existed.
It's not as if a deal was cut.

As far as my useless opinion goes, The C7 is comprised of more teams than are staying & they have the name, records & history of the Big East.
 They ARE the conference, the NCAA credits should stay with them!

That clause only worked with a 2 year notice. Since we are leaving this year it means zilch and that the C7 have to pay the exit fees.
However by leaving in a block of 7 it permits them and their new conference to automatically get a NCAA auto bid.

Isn't it a bargaining chip? Might be a hollow threat to wait it out with Fox obviously wanting them out, but that is leverage in making a deal to exit early, no?

If that's the case, curious that it was never really brought up once the exit date was announced.
That is a significant piece of cash for the remaining schools. Again, this is a win.

Interesting to note RE: automatic bids -
In 2011, the NCAA changed the rules for automatic bids to do away with the continuity regulations (X number of schools together for @ least 5 years, etc.)
The new rules basically stipulate that a conference must have seven active Division I members that sponsor men’s and women’s basketball and that the conference sponsor a minimum of six men’s sports and six women’s sports. I am assuming that the football schools conference meets this requirement.

Its leverage both ways. If the Fox Deal wasn't enough or the BE's new tv deal would have been for more the C7 could have waited. In this case Fox needed the programming now and paid the C7 to leave early. I think they got a bonus from fox for leaving this year.

One source familiar with the talks told the Tribune early Tuesday that the sides were "rounding third base" on their discussions, indicating that the haggling was down to perhaps the last few pennies and then the votes of 30-plus presidents of involved schools.

What? Who all needs to vote on this deal?

Actually this isn't quite true... see the the Great West conference. That said the BEFBS schools remain technically the BE as far as the NCAA goes so they keep the auto bid for that conference. The new C7 conference despite having the BE history and name is technically the new conference and therefore would have to qualify for an automatic bid.

The Great West Conference is a horrible amalgamation of schools.
They never met the old regulations on continuity and they don't meet the new guidelines - only 5 men's sports & some sports do not have 7 schools.
I'm amazed that they can manage to stick it out at all. Talk about horrible travel - NJ, Tx, Ca - for not wealthy schools.

The WAC is an example of a conference that benefitted fr/ the new rules after major bouts w/ conference realignment.
"The WAC’s membership for the 2012-13 season will include current members Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State and Utah State along with three new members announced last year: Denver (non-football), Texas State and UTSA. These eight schools ensure that the WAC meets the new NCAA Division I membership requirements as the conference moves forward."

You might be right but the WAC already had an auto-bid.

If i'm not mistaken Temple also played in the Big East for Football this year... they do get some share of the funds... maybe not as much as conn, cincy and sf but they are entitled to at least a prorated share.

Also note Rutgers and Louisville will attempt to mitigate their losses so subtract any savings from the BEFBS coffers.
