Washington Post says 12...

Postby Bostonspider » Sun Feb 17, 2013 1:54 am

John Feinstein of the Washington Post has the league as these teams:

East
Providence
St. John's
Seton Hall
Villanova
Georgetown
Richmond or Sienna

West
DePaul
Marquette
Xavier
Dayton
Butler
St. Louis

He says Creighton has been deemed to far west for non revenue sports.

He claims the Georgetown's president is in charge.

Was with a catholic 7 president last night and the lawyers have these guys scared to say anything. He told me the whole process is very time consuming but that was all he was going to say. Claimed he would be sued if any info leaked out and traced back to him. So anyone who has a source-doubt it.

Feinstein is no friend of Georgetown so where is he getting his information from? Article is totally bogus.

The tone of that article suggests that being a Catholic school IS fairly important to being a member of this league (unless you are a powerhouse like Butler!) I like the idea of Siena as a sixth member in the East side of the league. I'm also happy that Georgetown are taking the lead in this as it's more likely they'll remain a fixture in this conference if they have been the architects of it.

I know this is probably just another internet rumor but this poster is apparently brother's of someone on the PC board of directors and this is what he said regarding the Feinstein article:

This article is totally bogus. Any part that has merit is common knowledge at this point anyway.

I did not say Richmond is not on any list anywhere - I said Richmond is not on THE list and I stand by that. Siena is not on the list.

There is no 6 east and 6 west agreement especially for BB. Detroit is not on the list.

Creighton is well thought of and St.L is "on the bubble".

There is no Catholic "rule".

Butler and X are in and they asked in immediately.

Dayton is lobbying every BB 7 President to get in.

It is not true that the listed Presidents have no interest in who is in the league. Father Shanley is involved with BE negotiations etc. on a daily basis along with the Nova President.

AD's want 10 teams and Fox wants 12 The number is not really decided yet and there is no TV contract (just a verbal offer) and tere cannot be one until there is a league to negotiate with. MT is a consultant to PC so there is no grudge there at least with PC and he is semi retired in FLA and probably does not want to return to be Commisioner but has promised (on the record) to do whatever he can to help PC basketball - n ot necessarily the league.

MT was quoted extensively after he "retired" that Bb schools should dump FB ASAP before any of this happened - like 1 1/2 years ago.

As I said mostly BS. I suppose all you have to do is say you got it from an unnamed inside source and then you can print anything.

The big issue right now is how the $80M in the bank gets divided. Once that is settled - or goes to court - the rest of the dominos will fall quickly. Big East name is up in the air because Aresco is trying to hold the $80M hostage.

The $2.5M per year for FB and BB is for 2014/2015. There needs to be a bridge BB TV contract for 2013/2014 in any event - this impacts BB 7 if 2014 is the exit date - which it probably is.

ND went to the ACC because they needed to hook up with one of the leagues that now have major bowl tie ins. BE no longer has major bowl tie in and the "at large" route is shaky. ND gets the major (Orange) bowl over even the ACC playoff winner if they meet certain requirements. FSU and some other major ACC FB schools are VERY unhappy about that.

Siena? Detroit?
OK - the level of credibility, or lack thereof, has been established.
I'd love a 6 East/6 Midwest split, but the reality is that it's far more likely to be 5E/7MW.

Distance argument to rule out Creighton seems questionable. For most east division C7 schools it's equivalent to Miami...which was a conference-mate until bolting for greener pastures. Granted Creighton doesn't bring to the table what the U did, but they've handled that distance in the past when they had less TV revenue than they'll get now.

The other thing overblown is that the non-revenue sports from the east division would likely make that trip to Omaha every other year. The West division would make it yearly. Hard to see a trip every other year as a reason to take someone else.

If they didn't want Creighton for other reasons I can see it, but just distance doesn't add up.

I've heard from a fairly good source (who also said Gonzaga is still trying to figure out how to make it work) that Marquette openly is campaigning for Creighton. Creighton is getting in.

This entire article doesn't pass the sniff test. It feels like a NY Post piece, not one from the Wahington Post.

Katz mentioned that last week that one of the BE7 who has say is strongly in the corner of Creighton. Most CU fans figured it was Marquette.

I would assume it is Marquette, too. Seems questionable to me that Marquette would have much say, though, being fairly new to the group.
