Volleyball Tournament set

Postby Sactowndog » Sun Nov 10, 2013 7:36 pm

So the volleyball tournament is set with a clear stratus of teams. The top 4 teams will likely end with at worst 4-5 losses and the next 5 will likely have at best 9 losses.

1) Marquette (14)
2) Creighton (7)
3) Xavier (57)
4) Butler (43)

Marquette and Creighton are set to make the tournament with their top 25 RPI's. Assuming the last 4 games go to form, Butler has to at least beat Marquette to make it. Xavier likely has to win the tournament to make it.

Good luck to all the teams in the tournament. Lets hope for some upsets to get three in.

Thanks for the update. While the top four teams have clearly separated themselves, the seed order within the top four could still change, depending on the outcome of the final four regular season games. As a Creighton fan, I'm excited that we're hosting the conference tourney, and expect a loud crowd of 1200-1500 for the games Creighton participates in.
"When you lose a program like Creighton, there's no sugarcoating it," Valley Commissioner Doug Elgin said. "It's a devastating loss. They're going to go on and have success in the league they've joined." Yahoo Sports, October 10, 2013.

It seems very unlikely. Marquette has a 2 game lead over Creighton and while they could lose to both Butler and Xavier it seems unlikely. Xavier holds the tie breaker over Butler by virtue of a series sweep as does Creighton over Xavier.

Now maybe Creighton loses 1 of St. John's, Seton Hall, Georgetown and Villanova but hard to imagine them losing two. Similarly, Xavier isn't losing to Villanova, DePaul or Georgetown after sweeping them 3-0. So even if Butler upsets Marquette and Xavier loses it won't change the playoff seedings.

While not exciting the teams better start focusing on that first round matchup now.

Only 4 teams make the conference tournament?

Creighton (21-7, 12-4 Big East) will take on No. 3 seed Xavier (21-10, 12-4) Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Sokol Arena.

Big East regular season champion Marquette will face No. 4 seed Butler Friday at 4 in the other semifinal.

Marquette and Creighton seem to be the safest bets to emerge from the weekend with one of the NCAA tournament’s 64 bids.

The Bluejays entered the weekend with a No. 12 RPI, and the Golden Eagles sat one spot behind at 13.

Xavier likely sits in the most precarious spot with an RPI of 54, while Butler’s RPI is 36th.
