Purdue tops our preseason poll of CBS Sports college basketball experts as the top dog in the league entering the 2021-22 campaign because of its blend of potential, star power, talent and coaching acumen. Led by sophomore star Jaden Ivey and big man Trevion Williams, the Boilermakers went 18-10 last season but are positioned under coach Matt Painter to build off of a strong finish to last season after winning its final five regular-season games.
Predicted Order of Finish
1. Purdue
Trevion Williams is a bona fide stud and Jaden Ivey and Zach Edey are breakout stars in waiting. This Purdue team took some lumps last season as one of the youngest and most inexperienced in college hoops but the returning nucleus is good enough to be considered one of the best Painter's ever had.
Predicted Order of Finish
8. Providence
I have a soft spot for teams that wind up being escorted by traditional big men. It's not crazy-rare in college hoops, but it's no longer the way a staff seeks to build out its roster. Providence will be in that spot this year, though. Fifth-year big Nate Watson (who could be an 18-and-8 guy if he commits to rebounding) is one of the five best players in the Big East and will have to bring it every night to give the Friars a chance at making the Dance. He'll have help in the form of 6-6 wing A.J. Reeves. Ed Cooley was able to bring back enough to prevent this from being a lost season. Keep an eye out for Indiana transfer Al Durham.
Underrated Team: Providence
I'm not saying Ed Cooley's team is a guarantee to make the Big Dance. But with Nate Watson firmly in the conversation as one of the five best players in the Big East, the Friars are being too collectively doubted by my colleagues above in the eighth hole. Personal prediction: Sixth place, PC finishes the season with 23 wins and makes the NIT.
WEST LAFAYETTE - The Purdue men's basketball team lost its scrimmage Saturday at Providence, falling 89-88 in overtime.
Takeaways from the box score:
► The Boilermakers had 15 turnovers, but eight came from Ivey, who also handed out nine assists. Providence scored 15 points off those turnovers.
► The Friars hit the game-winning shot with eight seconds left in overtime on an offensive rebound. Stefanovic had a 3-point attempt in the final seconds but it didn't fall.
► Brandon Newman had a chance to win it at the end of regulation but missed a jumper. Jared Bynum hit two free throws to send the game into overtime with 32 seconds on the clock.
► Purdue had a 14-point lead with 10:12 left in the first half. The Boilermakers led for nearly 32 minutes.
► Providence's biggest advantage was eight points. The Friars led for nearly 10 minutes.
► The Boilermakers outrebounded Providence 29-24.
► Both teams shot the ball well. Purdue was 30 of 57; Providence 30 of 56. Both teams scored 34 points in the paint.
► Purdue didn't have any fast break points.
►Providence was 11 of 21 from beyond the arc. Bynum and A.J. Reeves combined for six to lead the Friars.

Against real (D1) competition:
PC beats Purdue
X loses to Vandy
UConn loses to Rutgers
Nova loses to Rutgers
Nova loses to Duke
Plus:
Creighton doesn't dominate a D2 team (understandable given they're very young)
This seems a bit concerning, though obviously it's very early and none of it counts. I know there are a million examples from prior seasons about how individual results from these don't mean anything. Still, we only have 2 ranked teams and both lost their (3 combined) games. Not exactly encouraging, at least.

Not at all worried. First, in nova's cases what is shared is minimal. Both scrimmages were situational too. Rumor (which is really all this stuff is) was nova starters beat duke starters playing primary m2m then switched to zone as agreed for a segment and it flipped. Rutgers, heard both were winners, who really knows?
The gauntlet for nova starts a week from Friday at UCLA, then the following week against Tenn and either Purdue or north Carolina. 1 loss in those 3 would be just fine, 2 would be troublesome, 3 would be crap because it will drop the rankings of the entire BE.
Scrimmages are nice, but again, not at all worried for the conference... just too many good teams.

Thanks, good to get some perspective. For the Rutgers vs Nova game I saw someone on Twitter imply that Rutgers won, but it's only one source and it's hard to find out more about it.
I'm not necessarily concerned about any game individually, but collectively thus far they're kind of rough and this is during a year where the Big East already has low expectations. If the results were reversed, so let's say Nova won twice, UConn won, Xavier won, but Providence lost, then there'd be some optimistic posts about that.
That said, it can often be a positive for teams to lose early on. Hopefully when the real games start this benefits our teams.
