I think Shaka will be successful at Marquette. Basketball centric school without the stupidity of Texas boosters. There's something about Texas basketball that just should be better than it is, across multiple coaches. Texas has the largest athletic budget in the country. But in the modern era, they have one FF (under Barnes), 3 elite 8s (2 under Barnes, one under Penders), 3 sweet sixteens (2 Barnes, one Penders) in almost 50 years. While I would be THRILLED if that was Creighton ; ) it's Texas and it's $223M athletic budget.

I think if you get Shaka out of football country, back home at a basketball school, and nothing but up from here IMO.

EDIT: 'would' replaced by 'will'

I honestly thought Marquette was going to hold out for Porter Moser. Interesting.

VCU fan here, I used to post when expansion talks were hot - I still check things out in hopes of one day being a hot enough commodity to get invited.

I think Shaka will do well at Marquette, provided he gets the right coaching staff around him. He's a great leader, inspirational, motivator and great in the public light. Marquette is roughly an hour from where he grew up, so he'll be excited to be near his mother again (who raised him by himself). I think he's a great recruiter, even at VCU he was signing top 15 classes right before he bolted for Texas.

Overall, he has fared better when he has a top assistant who is better at the X's and O's: Will Wade (LSU) and Mike Rhoades (VCU). I think he still hasn't won an NCAA tournament game without either of those coaches on the bench - although that stat might be outdated. If he can get someone on staff to handle that area, especially on the offensive side, he can create a program that should go to the NCAA tournament nearly every year. He went to the NCAAs at VCU 5 out of 6 seasons, and left us in good shape where we've gone to 9 out of the last 10 NCAA tournaments. I think he'll bounce back as a coach and do well at Marquette.

I'd be surprised if Beard's still at Texas Tech 2 weeks later.

I hope Marquette's made the correct long term hire. It's too proud of a program to be used as a stepping stone.

What does this mean for DePaul?

HAVOC vs. 40 minutes in hell? I love seeing high intensity defense in the conference. It'll better prepare us for the tournament.

We popped up to the catcher on a 3-0 count! Maybe it'll work, but I doubt that hire is striking any fear into the heart of the other BEAST coaches.
