Words matter. Language matters. What we say can hurt people even if there's no ill intent there. Racism is baked into our language and our culture to such a degree we don't even realize it. We often don't realize how much language or everyday things impact others. As a white male I benefit greatly from the structural racism in this country. That doesn't make me a bad person in and of itself, but I think there has begun to be a reckoning that we can no longer just stand by and support a system that oppresses those who aren't white males. Guess what if you grew up in America you have had used racist language, had a racist thought or done something racist regardless of your intent, regardless of your skin tone. We all have to do better.

Lots of White Males especially those who watch Fox News and OAN aren't ready to accept these facts. Culture changes. What was "acceptable" is no longer acceptable. Change makes people uncomfortable, but this back lash against change is ridiculous. The people who don't understand how hurtful microaggressions can be are those who have never been discriminated against and lack the empathy to put themselves in another person's shoes.

Yes "Cancel Culture" can go too far at times and there needs to be room for people to acknowledge what they did/said was wrong and to grow and work to be better, but have repercussions for behavior and language that is no longer acceptable is not a threat to society. I agree the media tries to pit us against each other and the political divide has never been sharper or more full of vitriol.

Yep. And as for "Cancel Culture," it's always existed, and the boundaries by which people get "canceled" have changed over the decades. It's not some new phenomenon. I also fail to see how McDermott has been all-out canceled in this situation. He's suspended from his job for a clear and hurtful transgression (even if unintentional) while an investigation is underway and he clearly has an opportunity to make amends in this situation unless a pattern is uncovered in this investigation, which I find unlikely. If a pattern were uncovered, that would be a different story, but he is likely going to be back to work soon.

Before conclusions are reached, such as whether a person is racist or not, let’s make sure we know all the facts and circumstances surrounding what he said.To truly understand a persons intent, what they mean, you have to know all the circumstances surrounding their acts. In this case I think what happens going forward is important too. To make a conclusion without knowing all the information, such as tagging someone as a racist by one thing that they said, is premature. Opinions require facts and information, accurate information, to be quality opinions. Otherwise, it’s not much of an opinion.

It’s frustrating because it’s going to take time to find out what is going on an to get into position to make the best decision.

Sorry, you lost most on your shot on a networks you mostly don't watch, while leaving out CNN or MSNBC as those aren't problems as well.

When one side fails to believe basic facts after watching those channels, they're not close to being equal. Are liberals blameless no. Are CNN and MSNBC biased yes, but they don't reject objective reality.

People will believe or hear what they want too. ;)

Exactly. Life really is one giant rorschach test. Some will always feel victimized regardless of the truth. Minorities don't have a monopoly on being slighted in life and certainly not on being victims of racism (real or perceived). Technically, whites are a tiny minority on earth. Does that mean we are victimized by "POC"? It's so ironic how the concept of "white fragility" came about by liberal academics, however who is really fragile these days if the word plantation makes you lose your mind? Who is really fragile if you see a noose when it's really just a garage pull? Who is really fragile when you have to create hoaxes like Smollett just to keep victim status? People like this need counseling if they honestly believe this stuff. If you want to be miserable, believe the critical race theory nonsense that says all whites are evil racists and plot 24/7 about how they can ruin the days of POC. If you want to be a normal human, don't make everything race 24/7 and treat people as individuals.

As much as I would love nothing more to discuss the reliability and dependability in honest news reporting between Fox News and CNN, back to college basketball talk...

Odds McDermott is coaching Creighton in the BET? With each passing day it seems more and more likely he is retained.

I would leave that up to a players only meeting. Then, discuss the results with the AD and other coaches.

We don't follow the "1 strike rule" in Omaha. I've already emailed the Prez and AD my 2 cents worth.
Mac ain't going nowhere. ;)

Firing McDermott isn’t the answer. Two wrongs don’t make a right if you will. This might be an opportunity for McD and CU to become leaders on this issue if they attack this head on.

Not trying to high jack this thread, but only white folk can be racist..... right?

Is that not the stone cold reality we are living in this country?

This will not end well.

good job GTMO. I did the same. Everyone who knows Coach Mac in Omaha knows his character. He has always been a stand up guy who truly cares for his players. Even the biggest social activist in the city over the last 30-40 years says this one instance doesn't reflect the character of the man.

Too late Xuper...you've already hijacked the thread...

Anyone can be a racist. We see genocide in Myanmar (Burma), in China, and other places. Historically we have seen genocide in several Mid East (Pakistan, Iraq, Yemen) and African countries (Congo, Sudan, Somalia, Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa). The important aspects are: 1) who is in power to make the rules, set the stage? 2) who has the power to change the rules, reset the stage? 3) Can those not in power effective positive change?

In the USA whites are the majority and are in power. Whites control everything of importance in the society and dominate #'s 1 & 2. #3 is not in play without white consent.
In Brazil whites are the minority, but are still in power. Same situation as USA...white control of everything of import in society. No change without white consent.
In South Africa whites are the minority, but are still in economic power. Shared control of politics with the majority, but economic stranglehold controlled by white minority. No economic change without white consent.
In most former african colonies the South African model is still in play. European countries/Euro descendants maintain economic control of majority black nations.
Most European countries and even the Aussies have racial/ethnic issues. No one is exempt.
India has racism and ethnicism, so too do many African and middle eastern nations. Most every country has some form of racism or ethnic discrimination. It's a very old song.
