It was a mistake, but it wasn't diabolical; it was a failed metaphor.

Anyone here lambasting other posters for attempting to provide reasoned viewpoints are the problem, because you aren't listening and attempting to understand both sides of an issue. Your ilk appear to believe that tearing down statues and erasing history in order to fit a specific agenda is a legitimate course of action. That is never true.

McDermott made a mistake in making a point. Otherwise, he has always been a class act anytime I have watched him being interviewed or interact with his players. NOBODY BATS A THOUSAND. He is contrite and appears to want to move forward in a manner that is in the best interests of the primary parties involved: himself, the university and most of all his players. Creighton is a very good, very well managed school. I doubt that Creighton will botch navigating through this incident in an effective manner.

Finally, I live in the South and the neighborhood I live in is chock full of descendants of Confederate officers, many of whom have become friends. I truly hardly see any bigotry or prejudice down here. And while it is true that a PLANTATION is what it was as you have seen it in Gone With the Wind, it also is true that a plantation is a farm.

Hey, look at that, no reference to slavery anywhere in the definition:

Plantation. 1 : a usually large group of plants and especially trees under cultivation. 2 : a settlement in a new country or region Plymouth Plantation. 3a : a place that is planted or under cultivation. b : an agricultural estate usually worked by resident labor.

Don't get me wrong. It was a poor choice of words. But the incident created an overreaction as far as many are concerned, and that is a fair assessment to take, while still believing there is no place in an advanced society for racism.

We can't laugh at ourselves anymore. Damn shame.

Racist: Adj: prejudiced against or antagonistic toward a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.

Words matter. Language matters. What we say can hurt people even if there's no ill intent there. Racism is baked into our language and our culture to such a degree we don't even realize it. We often don't realize how much language or everyday things impact others. As a white male I benefit greatly from the structural racism in this country. That doesn't make me a bad person in and of itself, but I think there has begun to be a reckoning that we can no longer just stand by and support a system that oppresses those who aren't white males. Guess what if you grew up in America you have had used racist language, had a racist thought or done something racist regardless of your intent, regardless of your skin tone. We all have to do better.

Lots of White Males especially those who watch Fox News and OAN aren't ready to accept these facts. Culture changes. What was "acceptable" is no longer acceptable. Change makes people uncomfortable, but this back lash against change is ridiculous. The people who don't understand how hurtful microaggressions can be are those who have never been discriminated against and lack the empathy to put themselves in another person's shoes.

Yes "Cancel Culture" can go too far at times and there needs to be room for people to acknowledge what they did/said was wrong and to grow and work to be better, but have repercussions for behavior and language that is no longer acceptable is not a threat to society. I agree the media tries to pit us against each other and the political divide has never been sharper or more full of vitriol.

Yep. And as for "Cancel Culture," it's always existed, and the boundaries by which people get "canceled" have changed over the decades. It's not some new phenomenon. I also fail to see how McDermott has been all-out canceled in this situation. He's suspended from his job for a clear and hurtful transgression (even if unintentional) while an investigation is underway and he clearly has an opportunity to make amends in this situation unless a pattern is uncovered in this investigation, which I find unlikely. If a pattern were uncovered, that would be a different story, but he is likely going to be back to work soon.

Not taking sides here, but I'd really like a comprehensive list of words to avoid using around african american people.

I’ll write up a list for you but only if you set up a camera and live-stream yourself reciting it out loud in Bedford–Stuy tonight around midnight.

I don't know about black people in general, so I can't speak for them.

However, My taboo list of words for youse Radnorites are: Philadelphia, Philly, Radnor, Finneran Pavilion, championship (in any sport), Big East
Champion (in any sport), Arcidiancono, Bey, Coach Wright, Dixon, cheesesteak, duckboat, Wells Fargo Arena...should I go on?

Oh yeah, almost forgot. Change your damn fight song and mascot - both are offensive as hell.

Your new Fight Song: BOHICA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Xqc_pMWyIU

Your new Mascot: Image
"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." - Nicholas Klein (1918)
"Top tier teams rarely have true "down" years and find a way to stay relevant every year." - Adoraz

Sorry, you lost most on your shot on a networks you mostly don't watch, while leaving out CNN or MSNBC as those aren't problems as well.

When one side fails to believe basic facts after watching those channels, they're not close to being equal. Are liberals blameless no. Are CNN and MSNBC biased yes, but they don't reject objective reality.
