'20-21 Top 5 BE PG's Debate

Any arguement that Colin Gillespie is not #1 is a very tough sell....the better arguement would be is he top 5 in the NATION.

Zegarowski played slightly more minutes per game, scored more points per game, more assists per game, more rebounds per game, and shot substantially better (48.8% vs 40.6% overall, 42.4% vs. 35.7% from 3) than Gillespie. Marcus averaged slightly higher TO per game (2.6 vs 1.9) but that's the only area where Gillespie had a better stat.

Hey, Z is phenomenal but is was nice to have TSA as a running mate...tends to allow one to avoid the opposition's best defender. On the other hand, Gillespie was asked to be THE leader and break in a couple of freshman starters at the same time. IDK if Z can maintain those type numbers, now that he will be much more the main backcourt focus. CG has already been there and I see no reason why his numbers will only get better.

You guys know better than me. If you consider Scruggs your lead guard I’d have him #3 on this list. If it’s KyKy, I’d prob have him just out of the top 5. I think KyKy’s skill set is that of 2 guard.
The truth is both are prob just “combo guards” sort of like what Phil Booth was for us.

For sure....both are "combo guards". I think "point guard" can be accurately applied referring to the guy that brings the ball up court, when void of any serious pressure, and then initiates the offense in the half court. Scruggs may see the bulk of this duty, so yeah he would be a solid 2 or 3 on this list if that's the case.

You ever so conveniently forgot about Saddiq Bey? Bey, Howard, and Powell were the three unanimous selections on first team all Big East. Bey was a stud and Gillespie had a "running mate" just like Z.

You lost me there....Bey was not a guard. I was commenting with in the subject of the thread. I don't know how old you are but "running mates" typically refer to the PG and his 2 (off the ball) guard in the backcourt.....traditionally speaking anyway.

To my point, it will be interesting to see if Zeg can maintain those lofty numbers w/o the benefits of the energy expended trying to keep Alexander in check.

I don't think we will have a problem scoring, Mahoney (assuming he comes back) will fill the void pretty easily along with having Ballock and Jefferson, there will be plenty of scoring options. Mahoney will likely be our second leading scorer behind Z. Losing Alexander will hurt our defense more than offense IMO.

I've been watching basketball since about 1970. And i know Bey isn't a guard, per se, but when we played Villanova, he guarded Zegarowski which should tell you all you need to know about where Jay Wright thought the games would be won/lost. And guess who guarded Bey for the most possessions when we played Nova? Tyshon. Call Bey what you want but you made it sound like CG was out there all by his lonesome. So Bey is like Tyshon, except 5 inches taller and a better shooter. I am sure Marcus would have been fine with Bey as his "running mate" or whatever term you want to use.

In an era when basically every team in the Big East plays at least 3 guards, a point guard having a "running mate" is outdated (to note, the all Big East team was 3 guards and 2 forwards). Creighton regularly played with 4 guards...and may do so again this year. So Z will have several "running mates" at all times, if you want to use that lingo. I think we'll miss Tyshon's defense more than his offense (shooting stats for Powell, Howard, and Bey while being guarded by Tyshon were "below their typical standard" to put it mildly). Assuming Jefferson and Mahoney come back, we'll have plenty of guys to put the ball in the hole.

I think it will be interesting to see what Zegarowski can do now that he is healthy. He said in the last week that this is the best he's felt in years.
