PAC-12 issues statement in wake of Cal State System announcement yesterday: ""The Pac-12 and our member universities will make our own determinations on when our student-athletes can return to play and when and how campuses will reopen to students."

Once again, the all-or-nothing mindset has quickly evaporated. College sports will return this Fall, regardless if a state, or states, mandate that it is unsafe to do so. There will be plenty of open states that choose to play sports, and those states and schools will be ahead of the curve because they will be attracting and acquiring many more prospective students/families from states that will be told they need to stay home (and cannot play sports).

I believe we all understood that weaker conferences and weaker schools were going to be impacted by COVID-19. The MAC is about to take some bitter medicine:

one thing that we started to see today that I think will take hold all over colleges this fall at least is that there are at least a few schools (South Carolina, Notre Dame) that are cancelling the fall breaks and then ending on campus classes before Thanksgiving.

Could change the on campus atmosphere for those games in December considerably.

Pete Thamel:

Sources: The NCAA Division I Council voted to approve voluntary athletic activities in football, MBB and WBB to start June 1st and go through June 30th. There had been a moratorium on that through May 31st. Other sports will be acted on on a later date.

‘But, but, but.... sports will not happen again until next year! It’s not safe!”

Wow. So many doomsdayers could not have been more epically wrong.

Sports as we knew it won't happen again until next year. You aren't seeing 20k for a game at MSG. Probably won't see 20k even for an Ohio St football game...

Feel free to re-read the thread.

There are many folks (here and elsewhere) that were adamant (and criticized anyone that said otherwise) that sports would not resume playing this year (even without fans). There continues to be those that believe we won't have any sports even without fans.

Whether or not anyone agrees with it, sports are coming back - despite what some were hoping for, I guess.

I wouldn’t go all Red Auerbach and light that victory cigar just yet. Let me throw a hypothetical at you... MU BB decides the best course of action is to close their ranks and try to remain separate from the rest of their Marq community while they compete (with or without fans as that is still TBD). On November 26th Theo John starts complaining to staff about feeling sluggish. He gets tested for C19 and is found positive. Every health official is going to tell Wojo that it’s essential that his team and all staff self quarantine for 14 days. They can’t walk around a full campus and risk greater spread. So do they just forfeit those next games?

Now to confuse the situation Marq played both URI and Minnesota earlier that week in 2 physical games in a preseason tourney. So the Marq medical staff gets on the phone with the URI and Minn staffs and let them know of the infection. I wonder what they’ll recommend?

Now multiply this scenario over and over.

Only two scenarios could possibly make this all work: 1). A mass testing effort well beyond what our country/society has been willing and able to commit to. For athletes, daily testing and ongoing quarantine from the outside world so they can safely compete. 2). A vaccine. Short of that, as soon as you start playing out what could go wrong, you’ll start coming to the conclusion that large scale team competitions will be very, very difficult. Just my opinion. Hope I’m wrong.

I am just surprised my boy gtmo hasn't come up with a cure yet. That guy is a national treasure. Everything he touches turns to gold.

Staying optimistic that sports will return in fall. I know Villanova football isn't Alabama, but our team is going to be really good this year, and we have a chance to make a statement against Wake Forest. I would at least like to get a shot. Obviously, like a lot of you, my life revolves around Big East hoops, really hoping that the season can go on as planned, with or without fans. Would rather watch on TV then not watch at all.

GW,
I "want" the same thing that you do: sports to return to normal. Looking at trendlines, number of deaths already, lack of wholesale testing, plus general logistics of the sports themselves, etc... i put "normal sports" on a different timeline than you.

If i have tickets to a 7pm game at Fenway, and at noon the National Weather Service gives a 90% chance of torrential rain and lightning in Boston, i'm going to be pissed, but i'll accept that the game is unlikely to be played.

If i then hear that the Yankees and Mets announce in mid-afternoon that they've postponed their games already, i'll put the likelihood of a Fenway rainout up to 95% or higher.

Then late afternoon if a sports radio guy starts advising people to go to the Sox game anyway, i'd instead still trust the official weather reports over the sports guy. By me deciding to believe the official weather report, that doesn't mean i hate baseball.

Of course, the Sox could still decide to play a 9 inning game in torrential rain and thunder and lightning... i mean, that's possible i guess. I'd think that's a really poor decision.

That's where i'm at right now.
