Men's Soccer: Sound Familiar?

Of the four Big East teams that fared better than the Golden Eagles last season – Georgetown, Connecticut, Notre Dame and Louisville – only Georgetown is likely to play in the Catholic 7 conference in the future. Two of the other Catholic 7 teams, St. John’s and Villanova, were near the middle of the pack with 4-3-1 and 3-3-2 conference records, respectively. DePaul, Providence and Seton Hall were relative bottom-feeders in the Big East last season, as the teams combined for only five conference wins.

Sounds like they might as well be ranking the 7's basketball teams.

Apparently Creighton had the best year for soccer in the potential incomers, with St. Louis, VCU, and Xavier all making the NCAA's.

It helps to have good olympic sports but will be a very minor factor I would think.

The Friars made the NCAA soccer tourney in both 2010 and 2011. Each year they won their first round NCAA game. One of those years they lost by 1 goal in the Big East Tourney final to Louisville, who was ranked #1 or #2 nationally. After the 2011 season, our coach Chaka Daley accepted the head coaching job at Michigan. So we had an off year in 2012.

And on the topic of sports like soccer which will have little bearing on which schools are invited, the Providence women's cross country team finished 2nd nationally in the Fall of 2012, runner up nationally to champion Oregon. And as a bonus, for about 10 minutes after the race was completed, the official scorer incorrectly announced the Friars as national champions until Oregon realized they had been screwed.

Also, regarding other sports like soccer and cross country that will not affect league expansion, the 2012 Providence women's ice hockey team lost by 1 goal late in the league championship finals of the Hockey East Tourney, and the 2012 PC men's ice hockey team advanced to the Hockey East final four tourney at the new Boston Garden before losing to eventual national champion Boston College by a relatively close score of 4-1.

Right, I agree that your AD made sense. The article, though, pokes fun at the C-7 and implies that PC (among others) blows at soccer. I just wanted to point out and make sure people on this board knew that our coach had just left for Michigan after having two straight very good seasons (2 NCAA bids, 2 NCAA wins, Big East Tourney finalist). So I guess the writer is just a d!ck and his sports clock starts in August 2012.

-Also, not sure the soccer/volleyball thing will be too important... all things being equal among candidates, it might provide a general idea of the strength of a school's athletic department. I know your AD mentioned it, but volleyball can't possibly have any real bearing on expansion though, can it? Anymore than women's cross-country?
