Just to be clear, I DID point out the NBA arena rent that SHU pays (the only figure I know for sure).
Taking that into consideration, they would still rank @ least #42 nationally if using the everyone else's unadjusted numbers.

And yes, I do freely admit that I'm focusing on something in lieu of on court success.
This does not change the fact that The Hall has made a financial committment that most schools haven't.

Richmond, VCU, and Dayton are the only two that even come close to the BE7 in athletic budget, right around Seton Hall. Creighton and Xavier have the clear biggest basketball budgets, but they fall well short of all the BE7 schools. If anything, I think it highlights how the expectations for these schools is going to be that they increase spending rather than keep the status quo in a move.

Just wondering, where do you think the added expenses of the Big East schools comes from? Are they paying their coach more for example? Paying charter flights, increased recruiting budgets?

Obviously, the return on investment for Butler has been much greater than DePaul so I'm trying to figure out how DePaul is spending so much.

I think arena rental has to be a significant difference in what the schools are spending on basketball, as well as coach's salary. According to an earlier post Seton Hall spends 1.2M a year to rent the Prudential Center. I would imagine all the other BE schools (and Creighton) have a similar cost, with say GU's being greater and maybe PC's being less. But maybe the fan's from those schools can let us know what they are paying in rent. As to Coach's Salary, a lot of the A10 guys are in the 1.2M range (Mooney, Smart, Stevens, Mack), but I think the C7 schools have traditionally paid a little more, at least to say JT3, Wright, Lavin, and Williams

I think you need to recheck the italicized part.

Creighton's basketball spending exceeds Butler's by half a million dollars.

Also, to compare these numbers, I think football spending should be subtracted. Since we know the new conference will NOT have football, FB spending seems irrelevant to me and complete skews the overall numbers. In fact, I'd even go a bit further and argue that if FB spending is a large part of overall spending, caution may be in order.

It was just a type on Creighton/Butler, I corrected it. What are you getting at with football? They're still spending the money, and football likely won't be the only sport not sponsored by the conference. If you want to go that route you need a lot more detail. It's just a sign of how much they invest in sports.

I'm suggesting that football spending, which will not be offered by the new conference, is inflating some of the figures in the overall athletic department expenditures column on a comparative basis. Since the new conference will not have football, any football related spending should be subtracted from the total athletic expenses column if we want to have a true comparison across schools.

I was also suggesting that if a significant portion of an athletic department's spending is football related, it may mean that the school could develop FBS delusions down the road. They then become shoppers for a new conference.
